RHYS THREW his car into park, killed the engine, and enjoyed the moment of silence. He was exhausted. His feet and legs ached. His head felt like it might literally split open. He’d promised Andreas he wouldn’t look at the comment cards until morning, so there was nothing to do but shower and sleep before they met up. He was about to open his car door when he saw Eric and two of his friends unloading bag after bag out of a car. They were laughing, and Janet was talking animatedly about something while Eric and the other man just smiled at her and did the heavy lifting.

He was jealous. He had no one to spend his holidays with. Andreas would be with his family, which he deserved. Any previous year, he would have accepted the invitation, but he knew if he was there this year, they’d talk business. Maria and the girls deserved more than that. They deserved to actually have Andreas at home and celebrating a holiday, not arguing about menus and servers with Rhys.

When Eric glanced back up, Janet was alone and trying to chew through the rope tying the tree to the roof of the car. He was about to go intervene, but Eric reappeared and pulled a knife from his pocket. He watched as the lithe man cut the ropes and pulled the tree down onto his shoulder, lifting it easily. He was laughing at his friends, and Rhys felt the jealousy again. Why did Eric only ever glare at him at worst, or give him a blank stare at best?

Slowly he dragged himself from his car, wincing as walking reminded him of sore muscles. Stretch. Hot shower. Sleep. That was the plan.
